“They don’t care about us”: Voices from Kos exposing inhumane migration policies

A new report from Glocal Roots highlights the human cost of EU migration policies, shedding light on the dangerous journeys, systemic abuses, and dire conditions endured by people on the move on the Greek island of Kos. The testimonies in the report provide a stark account of the lives of those seeking refuge, often forced into perilous situations and subjected to neglect that strips them of their dignity.

Through this report, Glocal Roots aims to amplify the voices of individuals who have faced severe hardships, offering them a platform to be heard.

People seeking safety risk their lives only to face abuse and hardship in Greece. Illegal pushbacks leave many stranded and vulnerable, while those who survive face dire conditions in the overcrowded and unsanitary Closed Controlled Access Centre (CCAC). After eviction, they encounter homelessness, exploitation, and racism, often lacking food, shelter, and medical care, leaving them in precarious and vulnerable situations.

The report urges the EU and Greek authorities to take immediate action by:

  1. Opening safe and legal migration routes to protect lives and prevent exploitation.
  2. Providing dignified and humane reception conditions, including access to healthcare, mental health support, and basic necessities.
  3. Implementing integration programs to support people on the move in rebuilding their lives.

As N from Sudan stated, “With unity, we can build something meaningful.” This report reinforces the need for solidarity and a shift toward a more humane migration policy.
