Yet, it&#8217;s the drama and urgency of the Syrian refugee crisis and the incapability of Europe to respond that may have finally set things in motion. Liska&#8217;s talk sheds light on the DIY grassroots response to the European refugee crisis. Can the response of a new generation of tech-savvy, entrepreneurial minds finally lead to the much needed shift in the way we approach humanitarian crises? Liska spent a good part of the last decade studying refugee movements and working in refugee aid organizations in various countries. She holds a Masters degree in International Development from LSE. Frustrated with the slow, bureaucratic, and patronizing functioning of many INGOs, she became part of the grassroots movement to the European refugee crisis in 2015, when she helped set up one of the biggest independent run camps for refugees in Greece and later co-founded a community centre for refugees in Athens. She is the founder of Glocal Roots &#8211; an association promoting and enabling the transition for displaced people away from dependency towards increased autonomy, resilience, and development. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
