We Are One Center

The CLOSURE

FROM SAMOS TO ATHENS

The We Are One Center on Samos closed at the end of March 2022. Most people have been transferred to the mainland and only very few women have been visiting our space since the camp moved in September 2021. The decision to close has been an incredibly hard one to take but we reached a point where it did not make sense to sustain the project any longer.
Over the last 3 years, around three thousand women have passed through our doors. The center was a place of support, love and sisterhood for many women from all around the world. Thanks to everyone involved in this project, thousands of women have connected, supported each other and done incredible things that show just what women can achieve together! It has been such an honour to be part of this beautiful community.

The We Are One Center spirit will live on. In May 2022 we opened women and kids spaces in the Victoria Community Center in Athens. We hope to that some of you will be part of this new journey in one way or another.

We Are One Center Samos: A Safe Space for Refugee Women and their Infants

The We Are One Center is the only purpose-built safe space for refugee women on Samos. We provide critical support and distributions to women living in a dangerous and challenging refugee camp setting.

The conditions in the camp are atrocious

Samos refugee camp was originally built for 648 people but currently accommodates 4,300 people. The conditions inside the camp are devastating with limited access to hygiene facilities, medical services, healthy food, electricity, and clean water. The camp is an extremely dangerous place for women and girls to live. Reports of assault and rape are common, and many women consequently live in fear of leaving their tents and containers. These atrocious conditions have a huge, detrimental impact on the physical and mental well-being of refugee women on Samos.
